Class-Thursday,February 02/25/2010

Today students composed a comic story considering themselves as a element from the periodic table. They had to choose 7 other elements from the group 1,2 & 13- 17.Based on their characteristics they had to show if they can be the friends of some elements and form a bond or not.

Review for the Friday's test 02/25/10

Homework: Study your notes and previous tests

Reminder: Test on Friday(02/26/10)

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

Class-Thursday,January 01/24/2010

Today students learned about the:
  •  applications of law of conservation of mass
  • Exothermic and endothermic reactions, examples and graphical representation of both types of equations
Reminder: test on Friday 02/26/10

Class-Tuesday,February- 01/23/10

Reviewed  previously learned  concepts by completing quiz from USA TEST PREP

Students designed a model of four types of chemical equations by using M&M's

Homework: Wtite the formula and names of the given compounds/molecules
  • Li & O
  • H & O
  • P & Cl
  • Na &  I
Reminder: class-test is on Friday 02/26/10

Monday, February 22, 2010

Class-Monday,February 02/22/10

Students made foldable(table fold) for the types of chemical reactions.
They learned about the :
  • Signs of the chemical reactions
  • Why it matters- how it is related to everyday life?
  • In a chemical reaction, bonds are rearranged between atoms
  • Bonds - broken down- energy is absorbed(endothermic reaction)
  • Bonds-formation- energy is released(exothermic reaction)
Homework- Q1-3 page 195

Class-Friday,February 02/19/2010

Today students worked on the

Station about the Law of conservation of mass:
  • they classified and balanced the chemical equations
  • they created models of chemical equations by using gum drops.

Thursday, February 18, 2010

Class-Thursday,February 02/18/2010

Review:
  •  Naming of ionic and covalent compounds
  • Balancing equations
Today students learned about:
Types of chemical reactions:
  • Synthesis
  • Decomposition
  • Single replacement
  • doule replacement

Class-Tuesday,February- 02/09/10

Review: Ionic Bonding

Class discussion about the test.

Homework: Write the name of the anions, their symbol, charge and the elements name.

Reminder:Benchmark Test on Friday 02/12/10

Thursday, February 4, 2010

Class-Thursday,February 02/04/2010

Review: Atomic Structure

Today students learned about:
Naming of Binary Ionic Compounds

Steps to write the formula:
1.Write the name of the cation first with the appropriate charges( as superscript) and then anion
2. Criss-cross the charges
3. write the formula ( chages as subscript)

Nomenclature:
1. write the name of the cation first as it is
2. write the name of the anion ending with -ide
Ex: NaCl-Sodium Chloride

Reminder:Test on Friday 02/04/10

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

Class-Wednesday,February 02/03/10

Compare and contrast Ionic and Covalent bonding. Give an example of each type of bonding
 Station Teaching: Atomic structure

  Reminder: Test on Friday 02/03/10

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

Class-Tuesday,February- 02/02/10

Review:Ionic Bonding and charge on ions

Today students learned about:
Covalent Bonding- Sharing of electrons(Non Metal+ Non Metal)
  • Single Bond- Two atoms share one pair of valence electrons. Ex: F &F
  • Double Bond-Two atoms share two pairs of valence electrons Ex: O &O
  • Triple Bond-Two atoms share three pairs of valence electrons. Ex:N & N
Homework: With the help of the periodic table make 4 covalent molcule and show the bonding in terms of electrons.

Monday, February 1, 2010

Class-Monday,February 02/01/10

Review:  Ionic Bonding

Students learned about:
Formation of ions/Charge-Depend on the number of valence electrons an atom lose/gain to become stable(like noble gases)

Homework-Illustate the type of bonding in terms of electron movement:
1. NaCl
2.Mg and Cl
3.H and Oxygen
4. Cl and Cl
